8 Kundrimani = 1 Manjadi

This is one of the six commentaries of Līlāvatī in Malayalam according to K V Sarma. It contains a problem on Uruḷ Paliśa, or what the text later explains as 'paliśakku paliśa'. The Malayalam term 'paliśa' translate as interest and 'paliśakku paliśa' translates to interest on interest [see r. 106 - r.109]. The text has a Sanskrit verse on how to solve the problem and gives detailed description in Malayalam. Compound interest is usually not found in any of the major texts such as Līlāvatī, Pāṭīgaṇitam, Kaṇakkatikāram, Ganitasarasangraham or in any Sanskrit Commentaries of Lilavati.

Although the manuscript is titled Līlāvatī Pāṭigaṇit, the mathematical problems contained in the surviving folios do not closely correspond to those found in Bhāskarācārya’s Līlāvatī. Instead, they show greater affinity with the problems found in other Kāithelī mathematical texts. The manuscript deals with a diverse range of practical mathematical problems, including land surveying, donations to priests, pancak, and other specialised calculations. Most of the solutions are presented in verse form. The manuscript begins with problems concerning the calculation of the areas of land plots of different shapes. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of twenty diagrams depicting various forms of land, along with their corresponding measurements—a feature not commonly found in other manuscripts of this tradition. These include Mr̥idangiyār (referring to land shaped like a mridangam), Ḍimaruār (referring to land shaped like a damru), Bicaniyar (referring to land shaped like a hand fan), and Dhenuākār (referring to land shaped like a bow), among others. The inclusion of such diagrams demonstrates the close relationship between mathematical calculation, geometric forms, and the practical measurement and classification of land.

Although the manuscript is titled Līlāvatīr Anka Puthi, the mathematical problems found in the currently available folios do not correspond closely to those in Bhāskarācārya’s Līlāvatī. Rather, they bear greater resemblance to the problems found in other texts of Kāithelī mathematics. The manuscript includes problems related to the laying of house foundations, donations to priests, ratios involving compound numbers, pancak, the buying and selling of goods, land surveying, and various specialised mathematical calculations.

This manuscript contains both text and commentary. Beginning with the quality of the sculptor, this text details the beneficial star for the owner, measuring land for construction, measuring scale, trees for suitable varnas are listed and detailed. This text could probably be pedagogical material for schools.
