- Description
- Punch-marked coins were the earliest Indian coins, first issued by merchant guilds and later by states during a period of growing trade and urbanization. They are classified into two phases: the Janapada period and the Mauryan period. Usually made of silver with a standard weight, these coins featured symbols such as the sun, animals, trees, hills, and geometric designs. They are called punch-marked because each symbol was stamped separately using individual punches. The coins were cut from silver bars and trimmed to achieve the correct weight, giving them their characteristic irregular shape.
